How to win a car - and drive your way to a fabulous prize!

Winning a car is what most compers dream of - collecting the keys to a shiny new motor, posing for those cheesy publicity shots with a giant grin - that's the moment you know you've really made it in the world of comping! Back in 2002 I saw a competition advertised in Good Housekeeping to win my dream car - a VW Beetle. The entry method was complicated: you had to purchase a Zanussi washing machine, download an entry form online and post this off with your receipt, completing the tiebreaker: 'I wash my clothes in a Zanussi because...'
I couldn't justify buying a washing machine just to enter the competition, but just a week before the closing date my washing machine broke down - surely this was a sign that I was destined to win the Beetle. So off I trotted to Curry's and bought a new washer on interest-free credit (I figured I could pay for it with the money from the sale of my old Fiesta... yes, I was pretty confident I would win!)

I hadn't entered many tiebreakers at this point, but I'd learnt from reading winners lists in Compers News and online that 99% of the time, the winning slogan was a rhyme. I didn't have much time to write a slogan, and I'll admit this isn't one of my best, and I wrote
'...from winter woolies to skimpy underwear, Zanussi technology is programmed to care!'

In the terms and conditions it stated the winner would be contacted by telephone before December 24th. But Christmas and New Year came and went with no news. But there was no winner announced online either, so I held out hope - and indeed, on 10th January I was on my way to Heathrow on a National Express bus when I got a call from Electrolux informing me that I'd won the car! I screamed so loud I'm surprised the driver didn't crash the coach...

I collected my car at Curry's in February, and was so excited I didn't even mind that the PR people made me sit on a washing machine for the photos...

I'm still trying to win another car, and am applying my usual 'Hard to enter, easy to win' theory. Two years ago I was in the final 9 for The People's Reviewer competition to win a VW Tiguan, and turned my loan car into a mobile disco for a week! This however was a dreaded voting competition and I just couldn't keep up with the leader. Last year I was unsuccessful in  the '12 Second Strip' competition to win a Renault Windster - there were only about 30 entries to win a £16,000 car - I certainly entertained the staff at the Renault garage when I stripped to a WonderWoman costume in their showroom!

Current car competitions
My next plan is to enter the fabulous TomTom Break Free competition. To enter, you have to upload a video of you in a traffic jam (although you can pretend!) singing along to Queen's 'I want to break free' - videos will be judged on creativity, popularity, attitude, presentation and personality. You need to upload a video before 15 September 2011 at the TomTom BreakFree Facebook page. There are quite a lot of entries already but that's because the competition is open worldwide - from the European entries, the winner will get a Renault Megane and the second place a Clio - the three runners up will get a £1000 flight voucher. Many of the videos look very professional but I hope TomTom will choose videos that are a bit more fun - have a browse through the entries so far and see if you can come up with something seriously offbeat!

In another nice creative competition you can win a Volvo X60 by submitting your 'greatest drive' at the Inside Volvo Facebook page. Enter by 3 July 2011. Volvo will shortlist ten drives, then choose the top three which will be voted on to decide the winner of the car. I've submitted a lovely drive through Snowdonia from Llanberis to Portmeirion. It looks like many people have chosen similar drives across the UK - perhaps choosing a route in mainland Europe would be a good idea. Volvo will be making videos of their three favourites so keep this in mind - too much motorway driving won't be very entertaining to watch!

Do you live in Norfolk? Holden Motors in Norwich are giving away a Volvo C30 worth £15,000 - test drive any new or used car there before 31 August 2011 and complete an entry form. They will draw 100 names and you need to attend the opening of their new showroom (date TBC), where one name will be drawn as the winner of the car!
Test drive your way to a holiday
If you have time to take cars for a test drive then there are several good competitions you can enter to win holidays. It's lots of effort to enter these, so they should be low entry!
  • Book a test drive in the new Nissan Leaf at the O2 from 6-13 July and you could win a 7-night VIP trip for two people to California, staying in a luxury 4-star eco hotel.
  • Book a test drive in the Subaru Crossover before the end of July and you'll be entered in a prize draw to win a luxury weekend break in Loch Lomond - to book call 08446 626629 or visit subaru.co.uk/crossover
  • Book a test drive in the Vauxhall Meriva (you must have your family with you!) and you'll receive a free goody bag and be entered into a draw to win £1000 towards a family holiday from awaywiththekids.co.uk - you'll need to download an entry form here for more details.
If you love driving then you could also win an iPad by telling Motors.co.uk your fun car story on Facebook, or enter the RAC 'What's My Journey' prize draw to win £1500 (you could use your Volvo entry for this). The RAC comp closes this Thursday, 30 June 2011 and I believe the Motors.co.uk one closes on 31 July 1011.

Finally, don't neglect the simple prize draws - there are thousands of entries but somebody has to win, and for a big prize like a car it's worth a go! My comp club friend Lorraine won a car in a text competition on egg boxes, and a workmate Emma won a Land Rover in a competition on bottled water - she sent off a piece of paper with her details on for the 'No Purchase Necessary' route. You can read a brilliant story over at In the Wendy House about Wendy's husband bagging her a new Hyundai last year! And as for my friend Marie winning three cars in twelve months, that's worthy of a blog post all of its own...

My recent winning photos and videos...

I've had a few wins with my creative comp entries lately so thought it would be nice to do a little round up for those of you that might have missed these! I have much more success with the fun comps than anything else at the moment and I really enjoy entering them, the odds of winning are far better than with prize draws. I do have an advantage in that I have an Apple Mac, Flip camcorder and a decent camera as well as a background in design - but all you really need is a good imagination - you can use your cameraphone or even webcam to create a good entry if you have an original idea.

This photo of my holiday in Barcelona has won a prize in the Rosemount Days Out competition - this competition runs until September 2011 - to enter, simply upload pictures of your Summer Days Out at www.rosemountdaysout.com

My beautifully crafted (and stinky) cheese watch won a runners-up goodie bag in the Pilgrims Choice Cheese Couture competition...
My Dad, oops I mean Paul Daniels, won a personalised BBQ Set in the Snappy Snaps lookalike competition... tee hee!
I was a runner up in Britain's Messiest Desk competition and won lots of Avery goodies (thanks to everyone who voted for this, although it was judged in the end!)
My homemade breakfast flapjack won us tickets to Harvest Festival with The Muesli Lover...

This photo of me and the girls won the weekly Lil-lets 'Let's Click' competition - this is running until 10 July 2011 and you could win the weekly prize of a year's supply of Lil-lets and a photobook. All eight winners are then in with a chance of winning a spa break.

I won £50 to spend at Funky Monkey Pants with this video of Ryland, which was posted on Facebook walls worldwide to celebrate Real Nappy Week!

My ability to change into 10 t-shirts in 53 seconds won me an LG Smartphone...

...and this video of me doing my jacket zip up won me £175 to spend on The North Face products!

I uploaded a video to the Toblerone Father's Day competition last week, but as yet I don't know if I've been lucky enough to win the prize trip to Switzerland! You can check out my video at the Toblerone website... I think this one's my most complicated movie yet, I even had to make a list of the shots I needed before shooting it, just like a proper Director!

As for this week, I'm out and about with:
Pink Lady Apples - upload a photo with one and this week you could win tickets to the Big Chill - only two entries so far!
Nakd products - every month they're giving away Nakd goodies to their favourite photo

I'm also having a big birthday picnic on Saturday and will take photos to upload to the Grasstronomy, Vanish and DeVere comps - wish me luck!

Blog comp round up: 17 June

It's back! Here's your round up of brilliant blog comps. For those of you who are new to these fiddly things, they're not really as complicated as they seem - and you have a great chance of winning! If you're unsure what to do, have a look at the comments that are already posted on the giveaways and you should see how it works. You often have to leave separate comments because the winner will be picked using random.org, where the blogger will input the total number of comments to generate a random number, and that comment is the winner. So if you  do all the suggested entry methods, leaving separate comments for each, you'll be more likely to win than if you just leave one comment...

Show us your Shoes

It's Meme'o'clock! I've been tagged by Rollie the NinjaKillerCat who's insisting I show him my shoes. Now, shoes play a very important part in my life so how could I refuse?
Today's shoes are a lovely new pair of Reiss 'Sandy' sandals, purchased using a gift card that I won from the Isklar photo competition on Facebook! I imagine Kate Middleton is probably sporting exactly the same pair... or is it bad form to reveal your toes when you're a Duchess?

As far as shoes go, I have a bit of an eclectic mix in my wardrobe. I won a pair of amazing Carvela platform heeled boots from SegSox this year, and a lovely pair of grey Converse AllStars from Cloggs, and bought a great pair of Kooples skull-encrusted flats on my Ford Ka shopping trip to Paris. Back in 2006 I won the ultimate shoe lover's prize from Elle Magazine - a year's supply of KG shoes; I could choose a pair of my choice every month for a year! Elle ran the very same competition two years later and amazingly I won again - as you can imagine, the girls in the Nottingham Kurt Geiger shop became vey good friends of mine. I was able to get shoes for my husband and friends too, and I still wear lots of them now - including my very favourite pair of pink patent Mary-Janes (I got these from Kurt Geiger in London to wear on a prize trip to the BAFTA Awards!)

I can't sign off without leaving you a couple of shoe comps can I? Secret Sales are giving away this amazing pair of Pucci sandals in size 6 (that's my size - swoon!)
To enter, email a photo of you wearing your favourite pair of shoes with your name, email and phone number to facebook@secretsales.com before 17 June 2011.

And Lauren Loves blog is giving away a pair of new Havaianas wellies so you can look good at the Summer Festivals! To enter, email lauren@laurenlovesblog.com or Twitpic @laurenlovesblog a photo of your favourite festival outfit by 30 June 2011. The entries will be voted on to decide the winner... good luck!

Finally I'd like to tag:

In the Wendy House @wendymcd83 (...bet she's wearing All Stars!)
Madam Luxe @cheepcheepcheep
Show us your shoes, ladies!

East Midlands Comp Clubs: new members wanted!

This week I've been lucky enough to find time to attend two of my local Comp Clubs - we're always keen for new members so if you do live in the East Midlands and would like to come along, please let me know. We don't bite, honest!

Notts about Comping is a group of ladies who meet monthly on a Saturday morning in the Crowne Plaza Hotel bar, in Nottingham City Centre. We enjoy coffee and a chat, share our entry forms and read through the latest supermarket and competition magazines - there's also a raffle where we all bring along a prize on a theme, and do a lucky dip to see who wins all the goodies. Today's theme was 'Europe', featuring lots of European food and a Swedish book!

My other comping club - which has no name, as it's still a relatively disorganised affair! - meet every few months on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, at the Castlewood Pub (just off the M1 Junction 28). I usually give Steve (Compers News editor) a lift up there, and he keeps us updated on the latest on-pack and text promotions. Pam Crampton is a regular too - Pam writes for several publications and has many years of comping experience (...yes, that means she's incredibly old!*). Sometimes we can have fifteen or so people at the meetings but this week's was a smaller affair, with just seven of us. Still, Marie's loud enough to make up for everyone else!
I'll admit this meeting is more about catching up on gossip than comping - we were so disorganised this week that we were all sharing a biro to scrawl our comp notes on napkins! Unfortunately Marie knocked a pint of water everywhere and accidentally used Claire's napkin to wipe it up... hmmmm, I wonder what important things she'd written on it?
As well as gossiping, we all report on our latest wins, and reminisce about the glory days of slogan competitions. Claire brought along some prize scratchcards this week, and ran a little comp to guess the mileage on her car. I was the closest and bagged £3 from my scratchcards, which I'll be spending on Tango for the imminent Win £250 Every Hour
promotion...

If you do live in the area and would like to come to either of these comp clubs, drop me a line at di@superlucky.co.uk and I'll let you know when the next meetings are!

* Please note, this is a joke! Pam is not old at all, and this is simply a running joke that we have in the local comp club. In hindsight I shouldn't have said this on my blog as Pam is well-respected in the world of comping, and I had no intention of offending either Pam or the comping community that enjoy her articles so much. Apologies, Pam.

Creative Comp Round Up: 10 June

Where's the blog comp round up then? I hear you ask. But never fear! It will be back next week, I'm now alternating it with a round up of the best photo, video, recipe, unusual and fun competitions I can find on the internet, Twitter and Facebook. I'm concentrating on creative competitions in particular because that's what I have most success in (due to them having far fewer entries than prize draws), and hopefully I can share advice and tips on how to win them. So here goes....

First of all the dreaded voting comps - in both these cases I have voiced concerns to the promoter, and am disappointed to see that neither competition offers prizes for runners-up or voters. I do believe they're still worth entering and making an effort, as in several cases recently (Be Spontaneous and Quidco for example) the promoter has changes the rules partway through and awarded prizes to their favourite entries as well as the most popular.

PINK LADY APPLES - VARIOUS WEEKLY PRIZES
Take a photo of you enjoying a Pink Lady apple at lunchtime and upload via their website at www.pinkladysunshine.co.uk/reclaim-the-sunshine - this is a weekly competition for the next 12 weeks and each Friday the photo with the most Likes will win a prize (week 1 was a luxury hamper). Here's my photo, although I'm not entering it until they change the rules or the winning vote count becomes more achievable! *STOP PRESS!* As of Friday 17 June, for the remaining ten prizes there will be a random draw from the twenty most Liked photos!

YORKSHIRE TEA - WIN A FLORIDA HOLIDAY
Upload a photo of you enjoying Yorkshire tea to their Facebook App by 20 June 2011 and the photo with the most votes by 4 July 2011 will win a family holiday to Florida.

Next up - recipe comps. The beauty of recipe competitions is that often you can cook one recipe and enter it in a few different competitions. Last night I created this tasty warm lentil and feta salad for the Apetina competition, and then submitted it to the Tesco Real Food Challenge too:

APETINA - WIN SALAD SETS
Upload a photo of your 'Star Salad'
using Apetina feta cheese to their Facebook App (not to the wall) , and every week until 1 September seven winners will receive a salad set - as you can imagine, the odds of winning a prize in this comp are great!

TESCO REAL FOOD CHALLENGE - WIN COOKERY COURSES AND MORE
This has already been running for a few weeks, but it caught my eye this week as the prize draw for all those that submit a recipe from now until 14 June is a break at Ragdale Hall Health Spa. The closing date for entries to the main competition to win a cookery course is 29 June 2011 - enter at www.tescorealfoodchallenge.com  And if your recipe is good enough to be one of the 80 shortlisted, you could win cookbooks, ovens and ultimately the chance to be in the television cook-off against 7 other finalists!

BIRDSEYE - WIN £1000
The Tasty Ideas for Dinner competition has already rewarded one winner with £1000, but it's still running for another two month. Simply upload a photo of one of the suggested recipes on their Facebook page (or a recipe of your own) - this closes on 30 June and 31 July 2011 and Birdseye are judging the tastiest dinner.

Here are a few photo comps:

DEVERE HOTELS - WIN AN OVERNIGHT STAY
Email your 'favourite holiday Summer Lovin' photo' to marketing@devere.co.uk - every Monday until 31 August 2011 they will choose their favourite photo to win an overnight stay with dinner at any De Vere Hotel. See more details here and at their Facebook page.
ARM AND HAMMER - £5000 OR A HOLIDAY
Upload your favourite 'WOW' photo or video to their Facebook page by 31 August 2011 and you could win a choice of fabulous holidays or a £5000 cash alternative. They will shortlist entries and then Katie Hill will judge the winning photo. There's an opportunity to vote on the photos - although the votes appear to have no bearing on the outcome, voters can win one of 12 weekly prizes. There aren't any video entries yet so I'm going to think of something suitably silly to enter!

Here's a comp that needs a bit of thought - the best/funniest answer wins (don't forget to check out all the other creative Father's Day comps here):

MOVIEPEG
Who's the best movie daddy? Post your answer on their Facebook page by 18 June 2011 and their favourite will win £50 iTunes - read more at movie-peg.com

And finally, my favourite kind of comp - the unusual ones!

I LUV MY CAN - WIN £1000
Recycle your drinks can into something fantastic and upload a photo or video at www.iluvmycan.co.uk by 28 August 2011 - they will judge the winner in each of ten categories (including most extreme cans and most fashionable cans!). Each category winner gets a trophy and one of the finalists will get £1000 and a year's supply of their favourite fizzy drink. I can't wait to get to work on this one!

ASOS COLOUR CLASH - WIN VOUCHERS
Choose an outfit that best represents the colour clash trend using at least 3 items from Fashion Finder. The winners of £300 vouchers, £150 vouchers and £50 vouchers will be judged by the Fashion Finder Editorial Team., who are 'looking for a great title and description, relevant tags and the most original interpretations of this trend' - enter at fashionfinder.asos.com  by 3 July 2011.

Hope that lot has fired your imagination - good luck!

Fun Father's Day comps

It's Daddy's special day on Sunday 19 June, so now's the time to rummage through those old photos and reminisce about the good times for this selection of creative Father's Day comps - good luck!

Win a Father's Day gift of your choice from the Handpicked Collection - just share your favourite gift on Facebook before 9 June 2011 along with a comment and they'll pick the winner.

Win a £100 Firebox voucher by uploading an embarrassing video or photo of your Dad before 10 June 2011 - they'll choose their five favourites to win.

Figleaves want to know why your Dad is so special - their favourite entry will win a £50 gift card. It might seem old fashioned, but rhyming couplets or poems always seem to do well in these type of comps. Post your entry on their Facebook event wall by 10 June 2011.

Win an XBox 360 and Kinect bundle with John Greed Jewellery - email your most original, upbeat, moving, happy, inspiring or amusing photos of how you connect with dad to competitions@johngreedjewellery.co.uk with the subject line 'Connect to Kinect' by 12 June 2011. The John Greed team will pick the winner. For my entry, I've emailed this photo of me and my Dad heading off to a Birmingham City match!

Fareham Shopping Centre want kids to say why their Dad is the best by 13 June 2011 - the top 3 entries will win 'a variety of prizes', and will need to do publicity photos in the centre on 15th June.

Teething Bling are giving away £100 to a fan who uploads a photo of the man in their life and says why he's so amazing! Enter before 15 June 2011.

Argento Jewellery want to see funny photos of you and your Dad - upload to their Facebook wall. Currently this is a competition where the photo with the most likes on 15 June 2011 wins £100 Argento vouchers but I've posted on their wall to ask them to reconsider as this violates Facebook promotion policy.

Does your Dad look like someone famous? Upload a photo to the Snappy Snaps Facebook Wall by 17 June 2011 and you could win a personalised BBQ set. Here's my entry, heh heh!
Zizzi want to see videos of your Dad dancing - the best will win a party at Zizzi and £200 Ticketmaster vouchers. Enter at their Facebook page before 18 June 2011. I reckon loads of people will just use old videos for this, so if you're recording a new one why not make sure your Dad's dancing to something current like Rihanna or Lady GaGa. The kids will love it!

Toblerone want to know how your Dad has solved a DIY problem (ideally, using Toblerone!) - upload stories, photos or videos. Their favourite will win a 4 day break for 2 to Switzerland! Download the full PDF details here and enter before 19 June 2011. I'm hoping to film my entry for this at the weekend, great timing as Rob has an Ikea wardrobe to put together...

Cardmaking and Papercraft want you to make a Father's Day card to win one of 20 sets of wine-themed cardmaking goodies worth £50 each. Post your card to them before 24 June 2011.

Netmums want to see your favourite photos of your child/ren with the man in their life smiling - their favourite will win £100 Amazon voucher. Enter before 24 June 2011.

Upload a photo of your Dad and say why he's the best in the land at the Forever Friends website and you could win an iPod Nano. They will judge the best entry on 30 June 2011.

Tell Marqués de Monistrol what is the funniest gift you gave to your father to be in with a chance of winning a case of their cava - email your entry to monistrol@unitedwineries.com before 4 July 2011.

...and a final thought - while you're sorting through all these photos of Dad, why not pop one on a memory stick and get it printed off at the supermarket to stick on a Father's Day card? Dad will love it (and it's cheaper than Clinton's!)

What's in your Fridge?

I've been tagged by Jane over at Competition Grapevine - she wants to know what's in my fridge, the nosey thing! I went out on one of my regular competition hunts with Steve from Compers News on Friday, so it's pretty good timing for me to share the comping contents with you...
First of all, you'll notice a lack of supermarket allegiance - I've got Morrisons apples, Tesco yogurt, Sainsbury's crème fraîche and Waitrose soup - being a comper means I have to visit loads of different shops to make sure I get all the relevant magazines, entry forms and till receipts. Unfortunately sometimes I'm so focused on my comping shopping list that I come home without the essentials, like milk. Ahem.

Anyway, onto the contents of the fridge:
  • Patak's curry pastes: these were part of my prize in the Patak's Curry Club video competition, and they make the most delicious curries!
  • Innocent kids smoothies: I bought these for the free magnets, and won a tee-shirt and goodies in the Innocent Twitter photo competition with my photo of the 'T' magnet on a tyre!
  • Orangina: their current promotion to win a £20,000 tour of France requires you to input a batch code from the promotional bottle online at www.orangina75.co.uk Ends 31.10.12
  • Perfectly Clear water:  As well as their brilliant 'Win your perfect day promotion', you can also enter your barcode number online at www.winyourperfectday.com to win weekly prizes of hampers, days out vouchers and water. Ends 14 August 2011.
  • Cobra Beer: The ideal accompaniment to my Patak's curry! Enter your unique code from inside the packaging at www.cobrabeer.com/celebritychef and you could win a weekly prize of an Indian feast. Ends 6 Dec 2011.
  • Little Dish meals: Little Dish meals are stickered with a competition to win a Sharky and George kids party - upload a photo of your child 'being creative with Little Dish' at www.littledish.co.uk/party to enter. Unfortunately the winner is decided on votes rather than creativity, so unless you can beat 450 votes you've got no chance of winning I'm afraid! Ends 1 July 2011.
  • South African apples:  Look out for the stickers on South African fruit at Morrisons - you'll need to post the sticker with your till receipt to enter the draw to win one of 50 pairs of tickets to sporting events. More details are at www.beautifulcountrybeautifulfruit.co.uk Ends 30 Sept 2011
  • Pink Lady apples: Upload a photo of you enjoying your lunchtime Pink Lady apple at www.pinkladysunshine.co.uk and you could win hampers, vouchers and other lovely prizes. There's a prize weekly for the next 11 weeks to the photo with the most votes. Week 1's current leader doesn't feature a Pink Lady apple so it will be interesting to see if they still get a prize! If you don't like voting competitions, you can still enter their prize draw to win a trip to South Africa instead!
  • Apetina feta cheese: Upload a photo of your 'Star Salad' featuring Apetina to win a salad hamper every week at www.facebook.com/apetina - I'm not sure when this one ends, but it's on week 2 now so it's not been running long!
...and that was the comping contents of my fridge! Now I'm off to make some sort of apple & feta salad - wish me luck!
