A Foodie Weekend

One of my main passions is food - both cooking and eating - so last weekend was foodie heaven for me. Friday night dinner at Nottingham's only Michelin-starred restaurant, Sat Bains, followed by a prize trip to the Waitrose Cookery School and an overnight stay in London, which I won with my celeriac and parsnip soup recipe at the Diablo Supper Club website!

Winning dinner at Sat Bains would be one of my dream prizes, but unfortunately in the last 5 years I've seen one solitary competition for a meal there (...and I didn't win it!). So we saved up to go there as a treat - our dinner companions were my good friend Di and her husband Paul, who have a son the same age as ours so it was a real bonus for us all to get out for the night!

We booked the Chef's table for the evening, which is a private room with a sliding door so you can see (and hear!) all the action in the kitchen.

Anyone who follows Sat on Twitter (@satbains1) will know he's a fan of fruity language, so it was certainly entertaining! At the Chef's table you don't get a menu - instead you're served ten 'taster' courses, so it's a real surprise (of course, you need to tell them if there's anything you can't/don't eat, because you could be served anything!)

For our meal, we enjoyed sweetcorn soup with popcorn, pork belly and piccalilli, salmon with oyster sauce, leek gratin with hazelnuts, pearl barley with herbs and 7 year old parmesan, duck liver parfait with tangerine jelly, wood pigeon with chocolate, Waldorf salad with celery pannacotta, and slow braised shin of beef with onion powder. These dishes were a lot more complex than I've made them sound in that quick rundown, but it's the simplicity of the ingredients that makes them so special and delicious.

The desserts featured an unusual take on tiramisu, an amazing chocolate, yogurt and cumin cake and a refreshing finale of rhubarb and tarragon with ice cream. Unfortunately I had a rotten cold so had zero sense of smell, but the food and the lovely Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the sommelier recommended tasted wonderful even without the aromas!

Sat is a fabulous host and whisked us off to see his new development kitchen after our meal - I know he follows me on Twitter so perhaps I should tweet some not-so-subtle hints about how he should run a competition to win a meal and overnight stay there!
Feeling suitably hungover, we were up early on Saturday to drop Ryland off with Nana before Rob and I travelled into London to check in at the Radisson Grafton Edwardian Hotel. There, we caught taxis with the other winners - including my friend Jane from Competition Grapevine - and headed for the Waitrose Cookery School.

The first floor venue is only a few months old and is beautifully designed, one end with an array of wines and glasses, and the other full of kitchen workstations. We browsed the hundreds of cookbooks on the shelves before we were invited to take our seats for the wine tasting. Rob and I have done wine tastings before, and I thought this one was particularly well-presented and explained - we tasted 7 wines from the Casillero del Diablo range, all from Chile. Here's Ray, the wine expert (he used to be Gordon Ramsay's sommelier at Maze you know!):
With everyone looking a bit more rosy-cheeked, we moved into the fabulous cookery 'theatre' where we discovered what we were cooking for our three course meal.
We were shown how to create a chocolate fondant, and then ushered to our kitchen workstations to get dressed in our aprons and get to work! We were on the same workstation as Konrad and Camilla who were an absolute scream. Rob kept skiving off the kitchen work to take photos though, I wasn't impressed but at least he got this nice photo of Jane and I in our chef's whites!
After refrigerating the fondant mixture, we were back in the theatre to see chef James cook the monkfish and tiger prawn salad with tomato vinaigrette, which we recreated and then sat down to eat. We were told to try two different wines with our dish, to see which worked better and I was surprised how much better the wines tasted with food!

For main course, we cooked steak and chips with Béarnaise sauce and for dessert, we served our fondant with a white chocolate and Grand Marnier ice cream. By this time, I can safely say we were all slightly merry!

After all that, I think we were all grateful to get back to our hotel rooms and crash out - what a weekend...

Prizes for Japan: Can you help?

My best friend lives just north of Tokyo, and when I logged onto my Mac on Friday morning the first thing I saw was her Facebook status update about the earthquake. She hadn't heard from her husband, who worked in Tokyo. I felt nervous and sick, and immediately turned on the television to see the shocking images of the quake and tsunami. Thankfully, her husband was safe, and managed to get a lift home to Jo and their son. But there are thousands more with family still missing, presumed dead, and it breaks my heart to see these terrible videos and photos of the devastation.
I've been lucky enough to travel to Japan 4 times, and the people there have calmly been expecting and preparing for 'the big quake' - but nobody could have predicted the size and ferocity of the tsunami that followed. It's awful to watch the video footage and see how helpless people were, and how fragile our lives are in the hands of nature.
Jo is co-ordinating a fundraising auction on her blog A Bit of This and a BIt of That. Bloggers can donate items for auction (which they must be willing to post worldwide) on their own blogs, and if you're interested you can comment with your bid amount - winners then pay into the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund via Global Giving. Read more and take part at Jo's blog, where you can also bid on her son's beautiful painting, or follow her on Twitter at @jojoebi - Jo will be posting up a full list of the auction lots on Friday 18 March.

As I'm not at all talented at art or crafts, I have come up with a way in which compers can contribute to the relief fund. I'm sure most of us have unwanted or forgotten prizes tucked away at the back of drawers - perhaps a voucher that you haven't got round to spending, or some makeup that wasn't really your thing. I'm suggesting you dust them off, take a photo and list them on eBay as a charity auction in aid of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. You can donate between 10% and 100% of the sale value to charity, and eBay will waive the listing and final value fees to match that percentage (so if you donate 100% to charity your listing will be free - however if your winner pays via PayPal, you will still have to pay PayPal's seller fees of 3.4% plus 20p). If you don't use eBay, I'm happy to create a listing for you - you will need to email me a photo and description of your item (plus its weight if possible, so I can price the postage) and then post the item when the winner has paid (I will transfer the cost of postage to you either via bank transfer or PayPal).

I've already listed several items which you can see here, and will be adding more through the week. In the item description I've used the phrase 'PrizesforJapan' and suggest you do the same, so all our items will come up on a search.

So, if you want to help support PrizesForJapan there are several things you can do:
  • Share this blog on Facebook or Twitter using the little grey buttons at the end of this post - add the hashtag #prizesforjapan on Twitter
  • Sell an unwanted prize on eBay giving some or all of the money raised to the fund - comment with your eBay link on this blog post, email it to me or tweet it with the hashtag #prizesforjapan and I will retweet you
  • Email me details of an item you would like to sell (due to the time involved, I will only sell items with 100% donation to charity)
  • Bid on the 'PrizesforJapan' eBay auctions
Thankyou for reading this - please click the buttons below to spread the word on Twitter and Facebook, or post a link on any other forums where you think people could help!

My comping friends

How many comping friends do you have? And I don't mean the ones on Facebook that you've never met! How many of you have comping friends that you meet up with in (whisper it....) REAL LIFE?

Back in 2002 I bought a subscription to the excellent Compers News magazine and am still a regular visitor to the online chat forum, Chatterbox. Not long after joining I realised that the first ever Chatterboxers get-together was to be held in a hotel in Nottingham, literally across the road from my house. I invited myself along, nervously wondering what these 20 or so strange women would be like.... well, they were all lovely! Many of us Midlands compers started meeting regularly, here's a photo from 2003 when my friend Sarah won her 'Crazy Taxi' from the Daily Star!
And although not all of these ladies might be as mad on comping as I still am, many of us still keep in touch and five of us meet annually with two other Chatterboxers for a boozy comping weekend. We've been to Bristol, London, Devon, Nottingham and at the weekend it was Jan's house in Warwickshire. We gather round a laptop and a copy of Compers News, take photos, write slogans, reminisce about our wins and generally fire up our comping enthusiasm! Would you believe the five of us in this photo have won ELEVEN cars between us?
These days I think too many compers sit at their computers all day long - to actually meet up and share a cuppa or a glass of wine with your fellow compers is a really special part of the hobby. My friends and I have organised three charity comping days since 2007 and it's been great for people to come along on their own and leave with new friends. We're not actually running an event this year, but there is a 'Compers Mentis' get-together in Weston on 1st October - check out the event details on Facebook. I'm also a member of the London Competitors Club and try to get to their meetings when I can, and I'm a member of two Nottingham comping clubs - although I'll admit both of these are pretty relaxed affairs and more about gossiping than comping! Lots of us have hundreds of friends on Facebook and Twitter and I bet many of these friends live closer than you think - why not suggest a get-together at a local pub that's easy to find, and see if anyone's interested? If you get some positive feedback, you could set up a Facebook group or event page with dates and details. I'm thinking about having a get-together in a Nottingham city centre venue or pub in the Summer, so if you're based in the East Midlands and would like to come, email me and I'll send you some details. I've also started a discussion on my Super Lucky Facebook page, if you fancy meeting up with fellow compers post your location and we'll see if we can get some groups started up.

I can't possibly sign off without sharing some of the weekend's photos with you all... here are some of our Fairtrade Foundation competition entries - don't forget most of these challenges are still running and with 21 prizes in each challenge there's such a good chance of winning!
And now that Absolute have amended the rules on their excellent 'Faces for Radio' competition, so that the ten most popular entries AND the ten best judged entries will all be shortlisted for the 3 prizes (of £5000, £1000 and £500) it's definitely worth trying to get the ugliest photo ever to be in with a chance of winning! Here are our attempts from 7.30am on Sunday morning with a hanogver...
Yeah, I know what you're thinking - how embarrassing! But it's fun, and as always those of us that make the effort are more likely to win - so stop being shy and get out there - make friends and get silly!

Comps for Mamas (and Papas) - and a BuggyTug giveaway *NOW CLOSED*

There are loads of great competitions around for parents at the moment so I thought it was time I collated them all into a blog post. First, I have a couple that you need to do ASAP to get your freebies...

You can claim a free Boo Boo product sample (while stocks last) simply by emailing info@husha-byebaby.com with your name and address and Hush Freebie in the subject line - this is from the Hush-a-bye Baby Facebook page.

Plum Baby are 5 years old and to celebrate you could win one of five hampers of baby food worth £50 simply by completing their survey here - the first 500 entrants also get a free Plum Baby pouch too, so be quick!

Brother Max also have a survey where you could win a One-Touch 3-in-1 Digital Thermometer - complete by 11 March 2011

Refer ten friends to the BabyBjörn Facebook page before 31 March 2011 and you will receive a cup worth £8.99 and an entry into a prize draw to win a BabyBjörn starter pack.

Mamas and Papas are running an amazing £30,000 giveaway to celebrate their 30th birthday - throughout April they will give away £1000 to spend in store every single day. To win it, you need to say why you or a friend need a 'helping hand'. To qualify, you should be nominating an expectant Mum or a Mum of a child under two years old and explain why you/they deserve to win. The entry form for this is instore, or online here and the closing date for this is 25 April 2011, although with a prize every day in April I would get your entry in ASAP! With thirty prizes available the odds of winning are really good - if you do enter, try not to make your reason for winning too negative - "I've got no money to buy anything for my baby", "I'm a single Mum", etc. Instead, try to focus on the positive difference that winning the £1000 of products would make to your life!

Do you take plenty of funny photos of your baby? You could win an annual Merlin attractions pass if you upload a photo of your little one's silliest moment to the Sudocrem Facebook page before 16 March 2011. Asda are giving away a Little Angels Baby Food hamper worth £100 to their favourite messy mealtime photo (closes 14 March 2011) - enter here. Both of these are judged, so take a look through all the current entries and make sure yours will stand out from the crowd!

If you're into cooking, why not register for the brilliant Netmums website and enter their food photo competition - upload a photo of a Netmums recipe, or one of your own. There are 5 top prizes of a set of five cookbooks, and also 20 runners-up prizes of the Netmums Recipe book. Get your entries in here before 31 March 2011. I cooked the vegetable hash for Ryland's dinner tonight but ended up eating most of it myself!

I don't like to leave the Dads out, so there's a fabulous photo competition at www.lovehome.co.uk to nominate your DIY Dad - the ten best entries will go to a public vote and the winner gets a trip to Disneyland Paris. Don't worry if your Dad is rubbish at DIY though, because you can also enter him in the DIY Disaster category to win a pink powertool and toolbox! Upload your photo and DIY story before 20 June 2011.

Win a BuggyTug!
Here's my own little giveaway - you could win one of two BuggyTugs, the UK's first pram wrist strap and a safety essential for all parents (and expectant parents!)

Blog Comp Round Up: 4 March

It's Friday yet again - how was your week? I had an amazing time on my prize trip to Wembley and still can't quite believe Birmingham City won the Carling Cup! Explanations

I feel a little sad that I have to do this, but after some criticism I need to explain a couple of things - why I did the interview with The People, and why I enter voting competitions. But first - a background to SuperLucky: a comper's blog.

The reason I started blogging was to keep a simple record of my wins, but as time has gone by I enjoy writing about my day-to-day comping, unusual competitions and offering advice on how you can be a winner. I am genuinely happy for people who win as a result of my blog. I'm becoming more involved in social media promotions and have decided that when I go back to work, I would like to advise promoters on how to run successful, creative and fair promotions online. In order to get traffic to my blog, I should be an expert in my field, so I need experience in every aspect of comping. I don't want to have advertising on my blog but will happily promote other blogs and sites that I enjoy, and if someone contacts me asking to mention their competition, or offering to pay me for a sponsored post I will consider it if it's in the spirit of my blog.

So, the article in The People. Yes, I will be paid for it, but I don't know how much. I've also been offered an interview with Bella and will be giving some of the fee for that to Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. I did the interview mainly to bring traffic to my blog, as I want it to become a popular and respected source of information for both compers and promoters. I didn't see The People article before it went to press so, yes, there are mistakes and some 'creative' journalism. I'm not the 'Queen of Competitions' in terms of prize value or frequency - BUT I think you'll find that I have been successful in more varieties of competitions than any other comper in the UK right now (if you know differently then please do speak up!) I've won major prizes on TV gameshows, radio phone-in and text-in competitions and also in recipe, video, fashion, photography, Facebook, Twitter, text, phone, crossword, treasure hunt, estimation, slogan, post in-store, blog, caption, design, prize draws, writing, raffles, and even singing competitions (don't ask!). That's why I consider myself to be an expert on the hobby and why I believe my advice can help both compers and promoters.

Secondly, the issue of voting competitions. I belong to a group on Facebook called 'Help ban voting competitions on Facebook' and I campaign for voting contests to be changed to judged competitions. Yet I actually enter voting competitions and ask people to vote for me. Is this hypocritical? Some people think it is.

My friend Alison started the Help ban voting competitions on Facebook group, and although the name is attention-grabbing, it doesn't really reflect what the group tries to do. There is practically zero chance of us getting voting competitions banned, as Facebook themselves have no say on promotions that are run on the site - legally promoters need to use a separate App and can't even refer to Facebook in the competition details, so I doubt Facebook care about what type of competitions are run at all. A more accurate name for the group would perhaps be 'Stop the voting and make competitions fair for all'. If we see a voting competition on Facebook, we post the link on the group wall so that members have the opportunity to go and complain to that promoter publicly on their fanpage. If appropriate, I post a link to my When Voting Competitions go Wrong blog post as a warning. Many promoters including Kuoni, Tesco, Ryvita and Orange have changed their rules because of our posts.

I don't have a problem with voting competitions that are run fairly, although I prefer them to incorporate a judged element and would like the promoters to take precautions to prevent cheating - this is why I have blogged about How to Run an Online Voting Competition. I understand that promoters want to increase traffic to their sites, regardless of whether these visitors are remotely interested in their product - and a public vote is the easiest way to do this. I also think it's acceptable for contestants to swap single votes on a site like www.getonlinevotes.com, or to post a request asking for votes on a Facebook comping group. It's multiple vote swapping on sites like Contest Exchange Votes/Likes that I disapprove of, because in most cases the Facebook profiles used for swapping are fake.

So why do I enter voting comps? That's simple - with my 210 blog followers, 1630 Twitter folllowers and 775 Facebook friends I have a good chance of winning - and after all, isn't that what comping is all about? Voting comps usually involve a creative challenge, and are fun to enter. I always put a lot of effort into my entry so that if the promoter does take note of complaints and decides to judge it, I'm in with a chance of winning. If I'm lucky enough to win on votes alone, I want people to see my entry and consider it a worthy winner, rather than assuming I cheated to win. Promoters often presume that because we complain about the voting element, it's because we don't have enough Facebook friends or aren't prepared to ask people for votes - I want to challenge that by complaining, and if they don't back down, then I'll try my hardest to win the competition to prove my point!

I don't spam people for votes on my Facebook wall or Twitter feed, I have a Vote Di and Ry group set up on Facebook which I have asked people to join if they're happy to vote for me. If I see there's no chance of me winning a voting competition I will retire gracefully and not get stressed. And if you don't like it, then you don't have to vote for me (I have a lot of friends who don't and I completely respect their opinion!). The important thing is, if you hate voting competitions then SPEAK UP about it, join the Facebook group and play your part in making things fairer. Nothing will change if you don't!

Show off Your Label: Win fab prizes for Fairtrade Fortnight

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight (which started yesterday) the Fairtrade Foundation are running 14 daily competitions on their Facebook page. The good news is, you need to ‘Show off your label’ and upload a silly photo or video to enter! The bad news is that the winner is decided by public vote... BUT don’t let this put you off, as well as the 14 main prizes there are 20 runners-up prizes of Fairtrade goodies for each challenge too (although they’ve yet to confirm how these will be awarded, I hope they will be random or judged rather than on popularity). Another good thing is that you DON’T need to be on Facebook to enter, you can also email your photo to fortnightshowoff@gmail.com. If you usually avoid voting competitions, please appreciate that this is for a really good cause - if you're too embarrassed to ask on Facebook for votes, why not post a link to your entry on this post? I promise to vote daily for anyone who posts!
Each challenge will be open for entries and voting for just 7 days, ending at midnight the following week. You can vote once per day so it’s in your best interest to get your entry in on the opening day of the challenge and remind your friends and family to vote daily for you! The winners of each daily challenge will be the valid entries which receive the most votes. There doesn't appear to be anything in the terms and conditions to say whether you can only enter or win one challenge.

Here are the list of challenges:

Mon 28th - Banana smile Wear a banana smile and win a holiday to the Dominican Republic
Tues 1st - Fairtrade Bodies Make your body into a Fairtrade item to win a chocolate making day for you and 11 friends
