Music to my ears!

I'll start today's post by issuing a giant THANKYOU to everyone who told me their favourite love songs for my Valentine's Day giveaway. I got Ry to pick the winner out of my new hat, and the proud new owner of the wonderful 'Forever Changes' CD by Love is... Marchez50 (alias @boo1003 on Twitter), whose top love song is 'You do something to me' by Paul Weller. Congratulations, please message me your address on Twitter and I'll get your prize posted out to you this week!
My blog post actually received a fantastic 71 comments, and do you know what that means? I was lucky enough to win the PriceMinister bloggers competition and I've won TWO iPhone 4s - how incredible is that? Even one iPhone 4 would be amazing, but one for me and one for hubby is pretty special. So I'm really grateful to every one of you who took the time to comment on my post - as a thankyou I'll be running another competition very soon so watch this space!

Thankyou of course to PriceMinister too, for running such a generous promotion - they also have an ongoing prize draw for sellers (until June) where you could win £1000 to spend on the site - check out the details at www.priceminister.co.uk - why not have a rummage through your old records and DVDs and sell off the dusty ones!

Have you seen the new Yellow Pages advert? A rework of the classic JR Hartley ad, it's about a guy trying to find a classic trance LP - Pulse and Thunder by Day V Lately. In conjunction with the ad, Yell are running a great promotion on Facebook to encourage us to get down to our local record shops. They've put a copy of Pulse and Thunder in ten record shops round the UK (Birmingham, Manchester, London, Brighton, Cardiff, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Bristol), and you need to call round the record shops to find out who's got the copy, then get down there before 6th March, have your photo taken with the record, register your email at the Yell Facebook page and upload your photo to their Facebook wall with the caption 'Yell'. Every day five lucky entrants will win £50 credit to spend at the record store they found the vinyl in, and the overall winner will get £10,000 worth of TV and DJ equipment as well as DJ lessons in their own home! If you love music then the odds of winning the £50 daily prize are going to be pretty good, so it's got to be worth a go...
And talking of vinyl, I won a white vinyl seven inch of the new Computers single on Kerrang! Radio last week - its been YEARS since I won any vinyl, I can't wait to play it to Ryland!

If you're a music fan then you should check out the competitions at www.clashmusic.com - they always have lots of great music related prizes on offer and I've won DVDs with them before. Here's a prize you'll need if you win the Yell comp - a Kipling DJ bag for girls - enter to win it here.
Spotify are giving away a great prize if you're an REM fan, including a guitar signed by Michael Stipe, and a Sonos wireless music system. To enter you need to say why you should win - Spotify will be choosing 'the most original' reason so think hard about your entry - could you put together a sentence incorporating REM song titles perhaps? This closes on 29th March and is open to Spotify users. Enter here.

That's all for now - hope it's inspired you to put some records on!

Blog Comp Round Up: 25 Feb

Hello there blog fans! How was your week? I have to thank Mr Superlucky for this week's fabulous prize - practically gold dust - a pair of tickets to Sunday's Carling Cup Final! I registered his details for the competition on the TalkSport website a few weeks ago (I couldn't enter as I won with them last year) and warned him that they might call. I did my research and printed off a list of the answers I thought he might need, he got 2 out of 3 right and won us a pair of tickets. The only problem is, he's an Arsenal fan and I'm a Birmingham fan - so this could get pretty tense...

There are a few blogs running the same comp this week, to win a £12 off a £50 shop Tesco Home Delivery voucher code for first-time shoppers. This might not seem like much of a prize, but if you fancy trying online shopping it's a good incentive - with 10 prizes on offer at each blog, the odds of winning are really good! Don't forget if you want your comp to be included in my round up, email blog@superlucky.co.uk or Tweet your link to @superluckydi!

Conran Style: spring accessory competition

What's your style this spring? My friend Claire pointed me in the direction of this lovely competition at the Conran Shop blog; to enter you need to find an accessory at the Conran Shop website (costing under £100) that would be perfect to update your home for spring. The competition ends each Friday at noon, when The Conran Shop will choose their favourite entry to win a £100 voucher, and the final week of the competition ends next Friday 4 March. To enter either Tweet a link to your chosen item as an at-reply to @Conran_Shop using the hashtag #conranstyle, or blog about your item (as I'm doing here!) and Tweet the link to @Conran_Shop. You can read the terms and conditions here.

I love the contemporary furniture and accessories at The Conran Shop, I live in a new-build house which is painted white throughout, so it's fun to add colour and interest with bits and bobs. Much of the storage in the house is also white, so I like to add splashes of colour with things like cushions, magazine racks, lights, candles, coasters, rugs and pictures. Lately we've been introducing a bit more wood into the house - an oak and glass coffee table, a large oak storage box for Ryland's toys and wooden photo frames on the walls, and wherever possible I try to ensure Ry has wooden and fabric toys rather than noisy plastic ones - although that's actually pretty hard with so many generous family members!

After browsing through the fab selection of brightly coloured and wooden items on the Conran Shop site, this fabulous Animals Tower for £14.95 caught my eye. Yes, it's for kids (and of course I have one of those!) but it also looks great and I could see it sitting happily on our low windowsill.
This might not win any kudos from the Conran Shop team of top stylists, but it would definitely brighten up our home for Spring... and of course the boy would love it too!

Get creative with the kids!

As it's Half Term and raining outside, it's the ideal opportunity to get your Crayola out and get creative with the kids - they're never too young to start comping! Here's a selection of competitions to inspire you...

Hampton Court Palace are running a competition to design a new promotional poster - there are two age groups, for under 11s and 12-16 year olds. Full details can be found at www.hrp.org.uk. The prize is to get your poster produced, but also a party at the palace and VIP annual membership to the Royal Palaces. Closing date for entries is 26 April 2011.

Made for Mums are running a creative comp to win £750 of John Lewis vouchers (and two runner up prizes of £500 and £250), you need to register with Made for Mums to enter and ask your child to create a drawing, painting or collage, depicting his or her dream room, whether that’s a bedroom, playroom or bathroom. Upload your entry online before 25 March 2011 - the winning entries will be judged by the editor of Practical Parenting and a John Lewis representative. Sadly, at 14 months I don't think Ryland is up to the required artistic standard for this one!

Pick up an entry form in store at Early Learning Centre and your child could win one of 2 Art and Creativity hampers worth £100 (pus five runners-up prizes worth £50). I can't find any age restrictions on the entry form, although it does also promote the Big Birthday Club which 0-6 year olds can join. To enter, just ask them to create a picture on the easel and hand instore or post off before 8 March 2011. I decided this would be the ideal opportunity for Ryland to enter his first competition, so I got out the paint pots and newspaper and this is what we ended up with. Well, I suppose it's a start!
The Stitch and Craft Show are running a 'Picture Me' competition to encourage your child to get creative and make a picture of themselves by knitting, stitching, drawing, painting or any other creative means. There will be 3 prizes in each age category (5-7, 8-11 and 12-15). You can see the promotional flyer here and entries need to be in by 4 March 2011.

So, whilst your little one is busy with these comps, how about you get creative yourself? The Book Depository (one of my fave websites!) are running a doodle competition open to all ages to win loads of fab Walker kids books. Details are here - you just need to download a doodle sheet, then scan your doodles back in and upload to their Flickr group by 11 March 2011. There's only two entries so far!
Derwent Pencils want you to embellish their logo - you could win a box of InkTense pencils or one of two runners-up prizes. Just print off the logo and get creative with Derwent products - upload at www.lovepencils.co.uk or at the Derwent Facebook page before 19 April 2011.

STOP PRESS! There's also a great competition for bloggers at Artful Adventures - your child could win an easel, Mister Maker craft set, Play Dog Magic Ice Cream Playset and Rainbow Aquadraw! Print off the Paint by Numbers sheet, let your 2-6 year old get creative, then upload it to your blog by 6 March 2011. For further details and terms and conditions see here.

Have fun!

Queen of the Competitions: my interview in The People

This weekend I have the honour of appearing in The People, with a lovely photo of my winnings (well, a photo of all the prizes I could find in the house!). You can see a scan of the full interview by clicking on the image below, and there's a brief summary of my Top Tips (none of which actually make much sense!) on www.people.co.uk too.
I've done a few interviews before, with The Mirror, Radio 1 and this one with East Midlands Today a few years back, when I was promoting a charity comping day:

I'm always happy to do publicity, as I find the interviews fun and the photos are a great memento for my comping scrapbook. I enjoy introducing people to comping as a hobby as the prizes have changed my life, and it can do the same for anyone. I get such a thrill when people ask me for help, and then they go on to win fabulous prizes! People ask me if the publicity might jeopardise my chances of winning, but it doesn't seem to have hindered me yet...

Blog your Tracklist, and a LOVE-ly giveaway! *CLOSED*

Music has always played a big part in my life and I love creating playlists for my iPod, so to celebrate Valentine's Day I'm taking up www.priceminister.co.uk on their 'Blog your Tracklist' challenge and presenting you with...

Di's top 3 love songs!
My number one love song is 'Your love keeps lifting me higher and higher' by Jackie Wilson - it's one of those songs that's so incredibly happy; every time I hear it I have to jump up and dance - this often causes problems when I hear it on Smooth FM whilst driving.
My next choice is the magical 'Fire in my Heart' by the Super Furry Animals. We played it at our wedding ceremony and I adore it... I've got tickets to see Gruff, the Super Furries' singer, on his solo tour next week which should be fabulous.
Finally, 'Górecki' by Lamb is a tune that I had on constant rotation (on cassette!) in my car back in the 90s. I saw them perform it live at Glastonbury 2003 and it was incredibly emotional.
Naturally, all of these songs sound far superior when listened to on vinyl, so I was delighted to see that there's loads of rock vinyl for sale on the Price Minister website - I hadn't realised you could sell on the site too, so it might well be time to part with all my duplicate LPs (after all, why would anyone need 4 copies of 'The Stone Roses'?) Ryland is a big fan of our Technics record deck, although his music of choice is 'Nursery Rhyme favourites' and '2 Little Boys' on 7 inch single... I hope his taste improves with age!
If you write a blog, you could bag yourself a £10 PriceMinister voucher just for taking part in this competition - all you need to do is list your own top 3 love songs! If you can get the most comments on your post you could even win a couple of iPods, a Fender Stratocaster or a Sony Vaio notebook - to enter and find out more visit www.priceminister.co.uk/events

If you don't have a blog, then you could still be in with a prize as I'm giving away a CD copy of one of my favourite albums - and the perfect choice for Valentine's Day! - the remastered 'Forever Changes' by Love

To enter, simply leave me a comment below with your favourite love song, and don't forget to leave a Twitter ID, email address or Facebook name so I can get in touch if you win! The giveaway is open worldwide and I will choose the winner using random.org on 28th February. If I get a good enough selection of love songs, I'll put the best together in a Spotify playlist!

(and incase you're wondering, I did get PriceMinister's approval to run a little giveaway!)

How to Run an Online Voting Competition

So, you’ve read about what happens When Voting Competitions Go Wrong, and you still want to run one? Here’s some advice to ensure your competition runs as smoothly as possible - although don’t say I didn’t warn you if it all goes pear shaped! My main advice would be NOT to make it a competition with one big prize for the most popular entry. Consider giving away more, smaller value prizes to the runners-up, to your favourite entry, or even to randomly picked entrants and voters.

Facebook rules
If you’re running the voting competition on Facebook, you should use an external App with its own tab on your fanpage. Asking entrants to upload content to the wall violates Facebook promotion policy - you can ask fans to email their entries to you, which you should then publish within your ‘App’. Many promoters will collate the entries in a wall post or photo album for people to ‘Like’, but this is still against Facebook policy. It also violates Facebook terms to announce the winners in a post on your wall, or even by sending a Facebook message - you should notify them via email.

As these policies aren’t enforced, you’ll see that many promotions don’t adhere to the guidelines - but it’s best that you do in case anything goes wrong. As of 1 March 2011, the CAP Code (The UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing) will apply to digital advertising and promotions on Facebook, so you should 'ensure that all advertising is legal, decent, honest and truthful', or you'll find yourself named and shamed - like The Sun did - on the ASA website.

Most ‘Likes’
Awarding a prize to the entry with the most ‘Likes’ isn’t a great idea as it can’t be properly regulated - and on 11 May 2011, Facebook  introduced a guideline stating 'You must not use Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button, as a voting mechanism for a promotion'. There is no way of ending the competition at a certain time, and you will need to be logged on to check the Like count of every competing entry at the exact closing time of the competition. It’s also confusing - you could have entrants posting on your Wall, and also as comments on your competition post(s), so you will have to look through all these. PayPal had to give out two prizes in a competition last year because they didn’t explain how to enter it properly and two different people thought they had won. The Outdoors Show and WeeRide both made a mistake counting the Likes and announced an incorrect winner for a bike and child’s bike seat - doing this will make you look very unprofessional.

Recently Sweaty Betty made an error counting the Likes in their promotion and announced the £250 voucher winner to be an entry with 18 Likes. An entrant pointed out in a Wall post that she had 397 Likes for her entry - Sweaty Betty realised their error, and not only did they give out a prize to the rightful winner, they also gave a prize to my entry, because my 50 Likes exceeded the 18 of their incorrect winner (who they had to give a prize to, as they'd already publicly announced her as the winner!). So the promotion cost them £500 more than it should have done, and made them look unprofessional too.

If you still want to keep the 'Like' element, why not make it a requirement that only entrants with a minimum of 50 'Likes' on their entry will go into a random draw or be judged for the prize? That way you'll get lots of new fans but without the stress for the contestant!

Note: Facebook updates in September 2011 mean that a comment or photo can be 'Liked' without a member needing to Like the fan page first - this essentially means that running a 'Most Likes Wins' competition is pointless, as fans are no longer forced to Like the page in order to vote.

Brand-related content
Consider running a competition that’s related to your brand: ask your fans to make a video, take a photo, or write a story. Ask them to include your product in the photo or video - this ensures they’re creating something specifically for your competition rather than just digging out old photos or using Googled imagery to enter. There are people out there with 4000 Facebook friends, who know they can win a voting competition by submitting any old nonsense, so make it harder for them to take part by demanding creativity and thought. If you’re asking people to take the time to do this, think carefully about also asking them to go out and canvas for votes - surely their efforts should be rewarded with a fair judging process?

Judge the entries
Choose a shortlist - ideally using an independent judge - of 10 or 20 entries which can then be put to a public vote, ensuring you will have a good quality winning entry that you’re happy with. You could offer a small runner-up prize to all those who made the shortlist. You will get more traffic to your page if you reverse this method and judge from the 10 or 20 most popular entries - but in this case, the most popular entry is rarely judged the best and sometimes that disgruntled entrant will complain publicly on your Facebook wall. If the final winner is chosen by a judge, post up details of why it was chosen.

Another way of introducing judging is to run it alongside the voting element. Rather than giving away one high value prize to the most voted entry, why not give a prize to the most popular entry, and a second prize to the one you judge as the best. The current Wicked Pig competition has three monthly £500 value prizes for the most popular entries, but the main £5000 prize will be judged from every single entry - this ensures they get the hits on their website for 3 months from voters, but more importantly that they get to choose a worthy winner!

Prizes: Quantity over quality
Don’t have just one high-value prize like a car or £5,000 cash. Imagine how you would feel if you spent 4 weeks begging people daily for votes, only for someone to come along and beat you in the last few hours - they get a car, you get zilch. Offering runners-up prizes makes the pain of losing a bit more bearable! The ideal voting promotion would have prizes for the most popular entries, but also a prize for the judge’s choice, AND prizes for random entrants too - this would encourage more people to take part. BizzyBee are currently running a promotion like this - the fans complained about their use of a 'Dislike' feature, which made the voting system incredibly unfair, so they removed it and added in the judged and random prizes. UPDATE 28/2/11: Despite changing the rules, BizzyBee still had to disqualify the entrant with the most votes after it materialised she had swapped hundreds of fake votes to win. The prize was a year's supply of cleaning products - was that really worth cheating for?

Offer prizes for voters too - just one small prize like a Flip camcorder is appealing enough to encourage people to vote.

Plagiarism
If any entries seem suspiciously good, then google the text or search for the photos using www.tineye.com. Don’t get into the mess Appletiser did when they announced a copyrighted Flickr.com photo as their prizewinner!

Terms and Conditions
Always have detailed terms and conditions for the competition (you can put these on your Notes page if it’s a Facebook promotion) and include a term that allows you to alter the competition rules. Do try to avoid changing the terms and conditions in the middle of the promotion - but if people complain about a voting competition before you have any entries then consider changing it to be judged. To start with a voting competition and then change to a judged competition part way through, like Ask Jeeves and Flip Video did, will annoy those entrants who have spent time gathering hundreds of votes. Remember though, it’s NEVER TOO LATE to change the rules if you do encounter problems!

You need to decide if you’re happy for entrants to use Vote Exchange sites and forums (www.getonlinevotes.com and Facebook Groups like Vote for Me) and explain in detail your stance on vote swapping, cheating, fake profiles, etc.Are you aware that people can actually BUY votes for as little as 10p using a site like Amazon Mechanical Turk? If you don’t want this to happen then make this clear in the rules.

Don't forget to choose a closing date and time when you can be online to verify the winning vote counts. In the American Apparel Halloween contest they let the voting run beyond the stated closing time, and the entrant in third place lost out to a newcomer. Again, this was unprofessional and unfair.

Voting systems
Avoid using the daily vote system that is so popular in American contests. Asking your entrants to hassle people for votes for weeks on end is spamming on your behalf. If a link to your promotion is flagged up as spam on Facebook due to an entrant posting or messaging it too much, it can be embarrassing.

Think twice about using star ratings or Thumbs Up/Down. Contestants will happily give their fellow entrants a Thumbs down or a low star rating, which isn’t in the spirit of a fun competition, and it‘s hurtful too.
Allow a period of time to enter the competition and then a separate period for the voting, so contestants who enter late don’t have a disadvantage. Don’t make the voting period longer than a few weeks as people will get sick of seeing your links all over Facebook.

Complaints
If your promotion is on Facebook, be prepared for plenty of complaints and arguments on your Wall. Make sure that someone is around to respond to these as professionally and quickly as possible to avoid a war of words between disgruntled competitors, bystanders and troublemakers. Assure your fans that any suspicious activity will be investigated and deal with personal insults by flagging the comments.

Fake Facebook Profiles
Be aware that fake profiles can be created easily or even bought online - there is a good blog post at Contest Mob on how to spot the cheaters. If an entrant has swapped multiple votes on a group like Contest Votes Exchange or Vote for Me, it’s likely that these votes are from fake profiles. If your Terms and Conditions state that votes from fake profiles will disqualify the entry, competitors may try to disqualify others by voting for them with a fake profile with the intention of getting them kicked out (this happened recently in a Sony competition, and resulted in the promotion being scrapped).

Don’t count YouTube views as votes
It’s easy to purchase 5,000 YouTube views for just $10 at www.socialkik.com - clearly not a fair way of choosing your winner.

Discourage cheaters
Make the fanpage, entries and voting only accessible to UK users - most multiple vote-swapping forums have members based outside the UK. There are organised syndicates in Asia who have hundreds of fake profiles and will win prizes in American and European contests, then sell these prizes on. Ask for a name, email address and a phone number from voters. It takes more time for the voter but ultimately you will have an email address for your mailing list and cheats will be less interested in completing all these details over and over again. In your terms and conditions make it clear that anyone found to be cheating will be immediately removed from the competition. When the competition is over, take time to check the votes to ensure that the winning entrant hasn’t cheated. It’s perfectly acceptable for you to disqualify the winning entry - Skoda did this with their latest promotion, and awarded the prize car to the entrant who finished second.

I hope this advice has been useful - if you have any queries then contact me at blog@superlucky.co.uk. I do take part in voting competitions myself (albeit with limited success), so I can offer helpful tips from both voters’ and contestants’ points of view. And finally, if you haven't already, check out my other post on When Voting Competitions Go Wrong.

When Voting Competitions Go Wrong

So you want to run a fun competition, where the public are encouraged to visit your website or Facebook page and vote for their favourite entry? On paper it might look good, but in reality this type of promotion can quickly turn into a PR nightmare. For example, did you know that it’s possible to buy fake Facebook profiles, pay a freelancer to source your votes, even to buy your votes online for as little as US$0.10 each? There are syndicates of people who set up hundreds of fake profiles to win in these contests then sell the prizes on. Before you commit to launching your voting competition, please read on for examples of how things could go wrong; if you’re insistent on keeping a voting element then please read through my other post on How to Run an Online Voting Competition.

Reasons why a voting competition is a bad idea:
  • It’s not the public that are voting. Naively, promoters really do believe that the public will visit a website, watch dozens of videos, browse photos or read stories in order to judge which is worthy of winning the prize. Sorry, but the general public simply aren’t interested! Even if you offer a prize for voters, you’re only really likely to have ‘compers’ visiting the site, along with the friends and family of each of the entrants. Many of those visiting won’t even click ‘play’ on the video or read the stories - they’re only there to vote and probably couldn’t give two hoots about your product.
  • You could end up with an absolutely awful/inappropriate/embarrassing winner. In the Asda Stationery Rio holiday competition the most ‘Liked’ entry was a nice little animation of the words ‘Asda stationary’ - perhaps if the lucky girl had spelt ‘stationery’ correctly, Asda would have been able to use the video for publicity! You can see the winning photos from last year’s Baileys photography competition online, with a glaring omission - the most popular ROI winner doesn’t feature because after awarding the prize, Baileys realised that someone in the photo was intoxicated (which was against the terms and conditions) and they should never have been allowed to win. Had either of these competitions been judged, the promoters might have ended up with a winning entry they could use for publicity, rather than discreetly trying to sweep under the carpet. Mountain Dew judged the winner of their recent £5000 t-shirt design competition from the ten most popular entries, and the fans were furious at their choice.
  • You will end up with lots of criticism and nasty comments about the entries posted on your Facebook wall, and much of it will be juvenile and embarrassing. If you delete the posts then it will only make things worse.
  • The same people are winning voting competitions time and time again. There aren’t actually that many people who are good at voting contests, as you need to have time, determination and a thick skin to succeed. Those that do well are household names on Facebook, and if one of them wins your competition there will be public grumbling and often accusations of cheating for you to deal with.
The following are examples of 2010 voting competitions that didn’t go quite according to plan....

PayPal Caption and iPod Competitions
PayPal ran a couple of voting competitions on Facebook at the end of last year. The first was to win an iPod, and PayPal asked entrants to leave a comment and then get people to ‘Like’ it - the most liked comment would win. Because there were no proper terms and conditions, it was unclear whether the comment had to be left on PayPal’s competition post, or as a new comment on the wall. As a result, when the closing date came, two different people claimed to have won the prize - to keep the grumbling fans happy, PayPal had to give both of them an iPod! Perhaps learning from their mistake, their subsequent iPad competition did stick to Facebook rules, and was administered using a separate ‘App’. However it was no less controversial, due to a late entry getting hundreds of votes in the last few days of the competition. Soon there were a whole host of angry wall posts accusing this contestant of cheating. PayPal assured their fans that an audit of the votes would be conducted, and after doing so concluded there was no foul play, but they never announced the winner, for fear of a public outcry!

Next Baby Boutique Model Competition
The ultimate promotion for competitive mums, the 2010 Next Baby Boutique competition required parents to upload a photograph of their baby via a tab on the Next Facebook fan page. The most popular 12 babies in the two age groups were invited to a photo shoot, and then the babies judged for the 2 top prizes of £500 and a 12 month modelling contract. The competition received 100,000 entries, and vote counts were not displayed on the Next website so althought you could see your child’s position, you had no idea how many votes were required to get them into the top 12. Soon, several Mums realised they had no way of getting enough votes to win, so a rumour was started that it was a fake promotion set up by a paedophile ring. Chaos ensued, with hundreds of angry Mums posting on the Next wall demanding their photos be removed. Amongst these, Mums desperately offered ‘vote for mine, I’ll vote for yours’ requests and for weeks the Next wall was a shambolic mess of begging messages and nasty comments. Eventually Next offered a place in the final to the top 24 babies, but surely a fairer solution would have been for Next to choose the extra 12 babies?

Kleenex Design a Cube
Kleenex ran a voting competition to design a tissue box cube, with the rules stating they would choose the 3 winners from the ten most popular designs. One of the leading entrants was told partway through the competition (after amassing hundreds of votes) that her entry wasn’t valid as it included photographs of people. This hadn’t been mentioned in the terms and conditions, and you can imagine what controversy this caused on Twitter and Facebook - many of the entrants had submitted cube designs featuring their family and friends. Kleenex then decided to change the rules again so they could judge the winning entries from a shortlist of the top 35, rather than ten! Eventually Kleenex decided to give an extra three iPads away to the entrants with the most votes to keep everyone happy.

Jeeves Unanswerables
Ask Jeeves ran a competition called ‘Unanswerables’ where the public were asked to answer Jeeves’ ten most popular questions. People could register on the Ask Jeeves website and give a Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down to the answers, and the most popular answer to each of the ten questions would win an iPad. It didn’t take long for the voting to take a sinister turn. The answers with the most Thumbs Up ratings soon saw their Thumbs Down ratings climbing - competitors were voting down each other’s entries. Complaints were made on the Ask Jeeves Facebook page, and Jeeves’ lighthearted responses infuriated the contestants. As the ‘Thumbs Down’ ratings continued to rise amongst the leading entries (which incidentally, were almost all badly written and unoriginal) Jeeves made the decision to change the system to a judged competition - but of course this wasn’t fair on the people who had campaigned to get hundreds of votes. And surprise surprise, the ten winning entries (all very impressive) had only a handful of ‘Thumbs Up’ votes between them, infuriating the entrants who had strived to get their hundreds of votes!

Sony Profile Hero
Sony ran a Profile Hero competition on Facebook where each week, the person with the most votes for their profile picture (which you could enter in a number of different categories) won a digital camera. As usual, people worked hard to get hundreds of votes and then suddenly, in the last few days of the weekly competitions, in every category a contestant rapidly gained hundreds of votes to get to the top spot. Suspiciously, all these leading contestants had Facebook friends in common. After some investigation it materialised that many of these ‘friends’ had no profile pictures, and only a couple of friends and ‘Likes’ on their profile page - the telltale signs of a fake profile. When disgruntled competitors posted on the Sony wall to complain about these ‘cheaters’, suddenly their own entries began collecting more votes, cast by these ‘fake’ profiles - the cheaters were now seeking to get the genuine entrants disqualified! Sony pulled the competition after a couple of weeks wthout awarding any prizes.
WKD Noel’s Rubbish Presents
WKD ran a competition in January to win five televisions - entrants needed to post a description of their worst Christmas gift and the 5 with the most votes would win a TV. Before long there was moaning on the Facebook wall that the leading entries were unworthy of a prize, and even complaints that the leading entrant was bribing voters by offering to post them gifts! Personal vindictive attacks on contestants were all over the WKD Wall, and eventually WKD had to offer a TV to their favourite 3 entries too.

Skoda
Not strictly a voting competition, Skoda gave away two cars this month to the people whose Facebook friends rated them as the ‘meanest ‘ or ‘loveliest’. In the final weeks of the competition Skoda had to remove many entrants who were cheating by rating themselves with fake Facebook profiles. The votes of the eventual ‘meanest’ entrant were throroughly checked and a decision was made to disqualify them and award the car to the second placed contestant! Whilst their vigilance should be applauded, Skoda should have been able to prevent such cheating from the outset.

And Finally...
Remember, it’s NEVER TOO LATE to change your mind about the format of a competition. Promoters who made the sensible decision to swap from a voting system to a judged system due to complaints include Lambrini, Orange, Flip Video, Ryvita, Tesco Diets and Kuoni. These are all promotions which have required effort to enter - videos, photos and recipes. Surely it’s only fair that someone who may have spent hours planning, editing and filming a video should be automatically considered for a prize, rather than them having to spend additional time badgering people to vote for it?

There’s a ‘Help stop Facebook and Online Voting competitions’ group with links to new voting competitions, and the members work as a team to try and get the rules changed. Many of us would love to see skill competitions made fair to everybody, and by educating promoters before they launch their promotions, hopefully we can do this.

Finally, if you’re not prepared to run your promotion without any element of voting, there are plenty of ways you can make your contest fairer, which is why I have written a second post on How to Run an Online Voting Competition.

Going the extra mile

One of my favourite quotes is 'the harder you work, the luckier you get'. With comping, I always endeavour to go the extra mile to make an impression. Fashioning home-made postcards, carefully staging photographs, stripping to a WonderWoman costume in a car showroom, Photoshopping new avatars, taking a 40 mile detour to find a roadshow - I'll do anything if there's a chance it will help me win a prize!

That's why a few weeks ago I found myself in Leicester's High Cross shopping centre with my two equally enthusiastic friends, clad in beachwear and grass skirts, climbing into a Kia Sportage to film our entry for the 'My Kia Adventure' competition. Picanto driver Laura had spotted the promotion on their website - I hadn't heard about it on the comping grapevine so popped along to the Kia Facebook page to browse the entries. The roadshow had already visited four shopping centres and there was only Glasgow remaining - the most popular video from each location was to be judged by Kia and the entrant 'showing the most spirit of adventure in their drive' would win a £4,000 prize. Voting for each shopping centre lasted 4 weeks, and as the previous winners had only needed 80 votes to win I knew it was worth putting the effort in as I thought it would be relatively easy for us to round up that many votes (you can see where this is going can't you...?!)

For our 30 second adventure, we had to pretend to be in a 'giant sandcastles' beach scenario. Kia provided some props, but we'd decided to come along with our own - rubber rings, snorkel, flippers, map, camera, sunglasses, disco ball, flashing light and fan! The Kia team were certainly impressed with our dedication to the cause, so we dressed them up too!
We recorded a few videos, throwing flippers out of the window, rocking the car, taking photos and generally mucking about - you can see our final entry by clicking here.

We uploaded it for voting but within a few days we realised we were up against a couple who were super determined to win - they racked up 200 votes in a week. I suddenly felt guilty about telling the girls it would be easy to get enough votes to win - whoops!

So here's where you, my wonderful readers, come in! Having failed to make the judging spots in the Cadbury Double Challenge video competition yesterday, I really need to make it up to Lisa and Laura by getting us through to the final judging in this one... please consider clicking here to vote for us (you'll need to be logged in to Facebook and Allow the App, but it just takes a second!) - this one closes on Monday 7 February and it's just one vote per person! Under our video, you'll also see a link to a prize draw where you could win £1000!

Once again, thanks so much...if you need a vote in return, why not post your link in the comments here and I'll help you out too!
