The winner takes it all

So, the time has come to reveal the winner of my first competition... (drum roll) As picked by random.org, and witnessed by my mother-in-law, it's comment number 27, which is @Mannymann! Congratulations! Send me a Direct Message on Twitter and I'll get your iTunes card posted off next week. As for the spot prize, that goes to @sugarplum70 for bringing my attention to this truly superb song "I wanna be a winner" from SwapShop in 1981! Your stamps will be winging their way to you next week... By the way, does anyone fancy doing a rework of this song at the Raising for Rainbows day this year?!

Thanks to everyone who took part, I'll be running more competitions in the future so do please bookmark or 'Follow' my blog! Now, I'm off to put together my Lucky DiTunes playlist!

27 July 2010

Win an iTunes gift card! *Competition Closed*

It's time for my first ever competition! The prize is a £15 iTunes card, which you can use to spend on any music you like (apart from Status Quo). Now, I love creating iTunes playlists, and have always wanted to do one featuring songs relating to the wonderful world of comping - so for my competition I want your help to create my playlist! To start you off, my favourite is 'Race for the Prize' by the Flaming Lips...

To enter, you need to do two things:
(1) Post a comment below including your suggestion for my comping playlist. It doesn't matter if it duplicates another person's song idea, but as an incentive to think creatively, there's a prize of 12 second class stamps (a comping essential!) for my favourite answer. Please include your Twitter username in your comment so I can contact you.
(2) Follow me on Twitter and then tweet: "@SuperluckyDi I've just entered your competition at http://super-lucky.blogspot.com/ to win a £15 iTunes card! #DiTunes"

The competition will close on Thursday 29 July at 5pm. Only one comment/song per person please. Open to UK residents only. To choose the winner, I will input the total number of comments at random.org and for that numbered comment I will check the author is following me on Twitter and has tweeted the above details correctly. I'll announce the lucky winner on Twitter on Thursday evening. Thanks for taking part and good luck!

Creative comping challenges

On my mission to enter the UK's more unusual competitions I've set myself four creative challenges for the next few weeks. Don't forget - the harder it is to enter, the easier it is to win!  I hope you'll join me in taking part as it's always nice when a promoter puts a bit of effort into running an unusual promotion.

Apostrophe cafés have launched 'Espresso Yourself', a competition to design a special edition winter takeaway cup. The winning design will be chosen by a panel including Emma Farrow, Head of Design at Topshop, Irene Bradbury, Assistant Director at White Cube gallery, and Kevin Curran, CEO of Tri-star Packaging. The winner will have their design printed on takeaway cups from November 2010 to January 2011, receive free coffee at Apostrophe for a year and £500 of art supplies from Cass Art. All entries will be displayed on Apostrophe's Facebook page, where fans can vote for their favourite design  - the top five entries will be included in the final ten, from which the judging panel will pick the winner. You can find further information at http://www.apostropheuk.com/espressoyourself/ - the competition closes on 16 August 2010.

Liftshare.com want you to show what car-sharing means to you by emailing a photo or making a short video. You need to ensure your photo features 'two or more people in or by a car'. The judge's favourite photo will win an iPod Touch, and the top short film will win an iPad - be quick though, this one closes on 30 July 2010.

Upload your festival story or video to the Zavvi Festival Stories website, and you could win £1000. I must admit, I've been to loads of music festivals in the last 20 years and my memories are very fuzzy, so I'm going to have to rely on photo albums jogging my memory for this one! Closes on 30 September 2010.

Flip Video UK are asking you to 'Share Your Summer' via a Facebook promotion. The first stage is to answer three questions before 2 August 2010:
(1) In 50 words or less, share what you are doing this summer that absolutely has to be filmed using a Flip Video.
(2) What will make your video stand out from the crowd?
(3) What's your favourite summer memory that you wish you'd had a Flip Video camera to capture it with?
Then you need to get your friends to vote for you; the 20 participants with the most votes will win a Flip Ultra HD camcorder and must produce a video (maximum 2 minutes) on the theme of 'summer', by 23 August 2010. The 20 films will be judged by the public and the most popular will receive £3,000. This competition sounds mighty complicated to me, so hopefully that should keep the entries low!

Photo comps to inspire you

Following on from my post about Twitter competitions, I've found lots more quirky competitions to encourage you to get snapping. There's absolutely no photographic expertise required for these - just your imagination and a little effort - so there's no excuse for not entering!

Childcare is Fun want you to email your photos of funny mealtimes with your baby or toddler - there are five Hipp Organic prizes up for grabs. Closing date: 30 August 2010.

Jellyegg want you to upload photos of your Crocs to their Flickr group and you could win a £50 voucher to spend at Jellyegg.com. You can enter as many photos as you like. Closing date: 31 August 2010.

Creative Tourist are giving away a luxury short break in Manchester and a signed copy of the Dorothy Bohm catalogue. Upload an image that captures "what being a creative tourist really means" to their Flickr page before 3 September 2010.

Visit Stoke are asking you to send in extreme tea-drinking photos, you could win a  Wedgwood Teaset, a Flip video recorder, Alton Towers VIP ticket and a weekend break in Stoke-on-Trent. Download the application form PDF and email it with your photo before 30 September 2010.

The PDSA are looking for pets that look like celebrities, pets that look like their owners, and also the most photogenic pets. The prize is a digital camera. I can't find a closing date for this one, so be quick!

CafeDirect -  as part of their 'Sow Your Own' campaign - want to see photos of your creative micro allotment! You could win lunch for two at the Gidleigh Park Hotel. Closes 20 August 2010.

Feather and Black bedroom shops have an entry form in their shops to win vouchers - send them a photo of your bedroom (it must include Feather & Black products, so I think this will be low entry!) and can win £1000, £500 or £250 vouchers. You can post off a photo with your form, or enter online by 1 August 2010.
And finally, if you visit the Top10.com Facebook page, you can upload a photo of you looking sad with your outdated phone handset to win a new iPhone - the most tragic case/best photo will win an iPhone 4. This closes on 2 August 2010. I'm off to take a photo for this one right away!

Happy snapping!

Smooth operator - winning on the radio

I started freelancing from home six years ago, and it wasn't long after that I discovered the delights of radio competitions. Back then cash prizes were common on my local stations, and they offered holiday prizes regularly. These days the sponsors aren't quite as generous, but it's still an enjoyable way to win prizes - and it's a quick way to get your competition fix! I remember driving home listening to Trent FM a few years ago when they asked for callers to identify a song in a second to win £1000. I pulled into a layby, got through straight away on my mobile, recognised a Jamelia song... it was the fastest and easiest £1000 I ever earnt! I won another £1000 a few weeks later for solving the Nottingham Tram Treasure Trail (this involved me inspecting trees in a local park, the general public must have thought I was crazy!), and have won two holidays, a Smeg fridge and over £5000 in cash from other stations including Gold, Absolute, Kerrang!, Heart and Smooth

I'll be posting more about radio competitions in the future, but today I'm concentrating on Smooth Radio. I don't know if it's because I'm edging closer to 40, but the music they play on Smooth is great  - loads of great 70s & 80s tracks - and it's definitely my local station of choice. Smooth has 6 local stations - East Midlands, West Midlands, Northeast, Northwest, London and Glasgow. To find your local station check out smoothfm.com -  our East Midlands station currently runs a competition to win £1000 daily on the breakfast show, 'Pop the Question' in the afternoon (this week's prize is £150 of Fenwick vouchers) and also this week, Castrol GTX are sponsoring a series of healthy prizes on the Drivetime show. You can also pop a Smooth sticker in your car for a chance to win £106.60 weekly. If you want to check what's coming up, make sure to tune in at the weekend, when they will be running adverts for the following week's promotions, and check the website regularly (I have shortcuts to all the good stations on my Bookmarks Bar and check them all every Friday).

Before the promotion is on-air, find out the studio number, programme it into your phone memory, and prepare your phone so that you only need to press one button to dial. If you have a spare handset (compers often have many of these with 'Pay-as-you-go' SIMs) then use two phones to call. If possible, listen to the station on a proper old-fashioned radio, not the internet or digital TV because of the delay. When you hear the promoter begin to introduce the competition, start calling straight away. The phone will hopefully ring out, but if it 's engaged then keep redialling for a few minutes. Often they need a couple of callers and may put you on hold just incase the first caller messes up! If the phone does ring and isn't answered, don't hang up - sometimes they take 5 minutes to answer... Smooth is a relatively small station, so when you get through to the studio the presenter will usually answer the call. Always sound excited, enthusiastic and friendly - and it's difficult, but try not to sound too nervous!

Smooth competitions are often quizzes, and you can gain an advantage here if you have someone at home to help you out (they don't mind this as long as you admit it when asked!) - I make sure I'm sitting at my Mac so if I'm stuck I can quickly google for the answers. If your friends are also tuning in to win, you could start up an Instant Messenger chat - they might be able to help you out with an answer. If you don't win, then don't despair - you've been brave enough to try and the next time you won't feel as nervous!

Finally, just one thing to add - I won His'n'Hers bikes on Smooth FM yesterday by identifying a classic track - it was 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder. Unlike Trent FM, this time I had a whole 20 seconds to name it. I'm really chuffed as I've always wanted a bike... now I need to win a child seat for the back!

Twitter comps - worth the effort?

Now, I'm a big fan of Twitter. And therefore a big fan of Twitter competitions! But I know a lot of folk are of the opinion that they're not worth the effort, and I'm here to change your mind. Lately, I've found that Twitter competitions are the ones that motivate and inspire me to comp. I'm disheartened by text competitions, where the only skill required is to input a code and whizz it off to the same short code day after day. And the competitions that I used to adore - supermarket entry forms with tiebreakers and slogans - are rarely seen these days. I need a fast fix for my comping addiction, and it's Twitter to the rescue!

In the last week, I've entered and won some great Twitter competitions - ones that require a bit of effort. And I've not shied away from them because of that - if anything, I've been keener to enter as I know that most people will only have the energy or patience to do a simple 'Retweet' comp, so the odds of winning are much higher.

@ClothingatTesco promoted a Twitter competition on Friday where you had to choose your own prize from their website. Perfect! The winners receive a prize they want, and there will be fewer entries because the majority of people won't have the time or energy to browse the Tesco site! I was over the moon when Tesco announced I was one of their 10 winners today, and I'm now the proud owner of this gorgeous handbag:

I also bagged myself a @YoSushi t-shirt in their photo competition - you had to tweet a photo of yourself in a Japanese-inspired outfit. I'm obsessed with Japan and already had a photo of myself in a ninja outfit (don't ask!) on my Mac, which I dusted off and tweeted. There's a similar competition from @Official17 running at the moment, where they want you to 'send a photo of yourself in leopard print' to win one of 5 Galibardy rings. I found this hideous photo from my hen do, sporting my friend's gran's catsuit, and tweeted that. Currently I'm the only entrant!
Last week @lurpakButter ran a Twitter comp asking you to tweet your idea of good food, to win one of five tea towels. Not a thrilling prize you might think, but it's an excuse to get the brain cells ticking over (and how I need this with a 6 month old sapping my brainpower every day!). I tweeted "A perfect poached egg with a nice runny yolk, enjoyed on a muffin with Mr @RobCoke!" and won a tea towel. You can never have too many tea towels!

This evening there were a couple of other more interesting comps - one to win books from @QuercusKids to tweet your idea for a #bookdinner - 'Gullivers Trifles', 'War and Peas', etc - and one to win hair products from @Get_Connected to tweet your favourite summer hairstyle. The prizes are usually small, but I find the fun element of them makes it worthwhile.

I hope perhaps this might make you think again about spending a little more time on these competitions; it's more entertaining than just retweeting all day long! And if you're really new to comping on Twitter my friend Jane at Competition Grapevine has written a fab post for beginners here that will help you out.

17 July 2010

Blog comps round-up!

Some of my favourite competitions to enter can be found on blogs - not just because of the prizes on offer, but the distraction of reading some wonderful new blogs and making new friends in the process! Blog competitions are often low entry too, with the advantage that you can usually work out how many other entrants you're up against.
For most blog competitions, you'll need to Follow the blog and Comment on the blog post. Often you can get extra entries by Following or Retweeting on Twitter, and becoming a fan or posting to your wall on Facebook. Sometimes there will be a huge list of entry methods, but I won't go into that here as it may well frighten you away!
Here's a round-up of some current blog competitions - I hope to do this weekly, so if you're running a giveaway on your own blog do contact me and I'll try to include you in my next one.

Closing 22 July:
At Sassy's World you can win some dark Rodial Brazilian tan spray
Closing 23 July:
Win a super Peanut & Pip picnic set aRedtedart
Win one of 5 copies of 'Learn to Tell the Time Right Now' at Rosie Scribble
Closing 26 July:
Teen fiction books are up for grabs at Madhouse Family Reviews
Closing 31 July:
Mellow Mummy is giving away a gorgeous Willvin changing bag
The Life Craft are doing a lovely giveaway for crafty types with a choice of knitting or sewing prizes

16 July 2010

Today you should be tweeting...

Well, it's 7am and miraculously baby boy is still asleep! So I'll take this opportunity to let you know which Twitter competitions are currently on - but remember, these giveaways are usually really fast turnarounds, so get tweeting as fast as you can!

@BabyBornFreeUK are giving away a Born Free Smart Start gift set when they reach 1000 followers - they only have 39 to go so hurry! You need to comment on their blog, become a Facebook and Twitter fan and Tweet for extra entries...

@DK_Travel are giving away a luxury picnic hamper - just tweet and let them know your favourite picnic spot - this closes on 19th August and there are more details here.

@KitchenAidUK are giving away a toaster - RT before Monday 9am.

@STORETWENTYONE have a £30 voucher to give away - closes on Monday 19th too.

There are loads more of course, but I can hear the faint sound of a waking baby so I'll leave you with this lot for now - try a Twitter search for 'RT win' to pick up the new ones!

15 July 2010

Win a shedload of stuff - literally!

There's a super competition running at Husqvarna dealers at the moment to guess the value of everything in Diarmuid Gavin's shed... and you can win it all!

You need to visit your local participating dealer (I actually saw the competition advertised in my local free paper, so it might be worth checking yours) and view the shed contents, estimating the RRP value of them. Then complete an entry form, which also includes a tiebreaker - 'tell us in 10 words or less what the Husqvarna brand means to you' - although the terms and conditions do state that the first correct entry selected at random will win! The prize is all the machinery contained in the shed, and also a three hour home visit from Diarmuid Gavin.
You'd better hurry though - closing date is 31st July!
Looking at this little lot, I'm not sure we could even squeeze the leafblower into our tiny shed, never mind a garden tractor! If only they were giving away a giant shed too...

14 July 2010

ATS Euromaster - win £250 vouchers

Driving home today I spotted the magic word - 'WIN!' outside my local ATS Euromaster and popped in to check it out. You need to have a free Vehicle Health Check - which took about 5 minutes - and then complete an entry form and pop it into the box in reception before 16th August. There are 6 prizes  - one £250 voucher and five £50 vouchers for Argos, M&S or Homebase. The chaps in my ATS were grateful of having a customer! You can locate your nearest branch at www.atseuromaster.co.uk

Dr Martens - a blog for Cloggs!

This is my entry for today's Cloggs twitter competition!

I bought my first - and only - pair of Dr Martens in 1990. They were a special 'One in a million' pair to celebrate 30 years of DMs, and I still wear them now, so that was definitely money well spent! At the time I was the first girl at my grammar school to wear 10-hole DMs (my friend Claire has been wearing her 8-hole Cherry Reds for some time!) and I thought I was the bee's knees. Naturally I was a real indie kid, recording the John Peel show onto cassette every night and listening to it on my Walkman on the 69 bus to school!

I wore my DMs to many gigs in Birmingham during the 90s - we enjoyed Nirvana at Goldwyns, Blur at The Institute, Teenage Fanclub at Burberries, Spiritualized at Edwards No. 8 and loads more (memories may be a little fuzzy due to surplus cider!) My Mum wasn't impressed when I insisted on wearing them to my big sister's wedding though!
When I set off for Bradford University in 1992, the DMs came with me, and with my pink hair we followed Green Day and the Beastie Boys on tour together. They've been to 11 Glastonbury festivals and survived the mud, danced on the Brixton Academy stage with the Offspring and oh, how I wish I could remember all the other adventures!
Writing this blog has inspired me to clean up my trusty DMs and wear them to the pub this week! Happy 50th BIrthday Doc!

Raising for Rainbows 2010

I've been busy lately updating the (rather basic!) Raising for Rainbows website - this is a charity comping day I help to organise, raising cash for the excellent Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. So I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to blog about the event, spread the word and hopefully get some donations for our charity raffle!

I've been a regular at 'Comping' Days with my friends for many years now, and in 2006 we decided to organise our own event. With a helping hand from the guys at Accolade Publishing, COMP PRIDE was born. Held at Pride Park in Derby, this was a huge success, but it took a lot of hard work and the venue was super expensive so we took a year off in 2008, returning on a smaller scale with 'Raising for Rainbows' in 2009. At last year's event we raised a huge £3560 for the Hospice, and of course we'd like to do better than that in 2010!

This year's shindig is on Sunday 17th October at Mickleover Court Hotel in Derbyshire. We have just a few tickets left so do email us if you're interested! There will be loads going on:

  • quizzes and competitions (some easy, some ridiculously hard!)
  • bingo (featuring my special 'bingo handbag')
  • guest speakers (last year we had Jane from Compers Grapevine, Steve from Compers News, Kevin from the London Competitors Club and top comper Pam Crampton)
  • our fabulous charity raffle!

We rely on donations for the raffle prizes, so if you're able to help us out that would be great. A list of current sponsors and prizes is on the Raising for Rainbows website, but we're hoping to add plenty more before October!

Whilst updating the site I noticed that Rainbows has a fancy new logo and website, as well as Facebook and Twitter pages. On their website there's a competition to win a Giant Rainbows bear and a bumper box of muffin and flapjack treats by naming the Rainbows Bear. All entries submitted will be voted on by staff and children at Rainbows who will be picking their favourite names - a winner will be drawn at random from a list of shortlisted entries. They welcome donations of any amount for entering this competition and it closes on 30th August at midday. The link is http://www.rainbows.co.uk/get-involved/competition ...good luck!

Oh, and I won another tea towel on Twitter... an e-Towel this time. Anyone would think I enjoy doing the dishes! Hmmm....

12 July 2010

Potty Dancing

Huggies are running a fun new competition for a family trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. Sadly my son can't even crawl yet, never mind dance, so we won't be entering! You need to get your little one to learn the Potty Dance and upload a video here. The top 100 most popular videos will be judged - "Energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to take part will form the basis of the judging criteria - " with the best winning the Disney trip. This comp closes on 12 August, so get your kids wiggling those bots!

9 July 2010

Everyone's a winner, baby!

Since the moment I discovered I was pregnant I've been hunting down all sorts of competitions to win baby goodies, but one prize which has eluded me so far is a cloth nappy! I use washable BumGenius nappies for baby Ryland but would love to expand his wardrobe, so I love the competition that's currently running at the Babi Pur blog to win three cute cloth nappies. It's one of those slightly complicated competitions which involve the use of lots of social media - but I love these, simply because a lot of folk overlook them as they're too time-consuming! You can increase your chances of winning by Retweeting, liking the Babi Pur Facebook page & YouTube channel and reviewing on their website too. Good luck!

And whilst we're talking baby, you can also enter to win a gorgeous Quinny Buzz 4 pushchair worth £400 at Pushchair Trader (closes August 5th) and an inflatable baby bath at Kiddycat (closes July 18th). And the Baba Me Facebook Fan page has regular competitions running too, including the Bonnie Baba one to win £500 Baba Me vouchers - which reminds me, I must get a photo of Ryland entered quicksmart!

Oh, and I won a tea towel today in the Lurpak Twitter competition too - hurrah!

8 July 2010

Football/footwear

I finally found some time this morning to go through my inbox and found an email from Heineken hiding in there - I've won a runners-up prize in their recent UEFA Champions League promotion (I can't resist on-pack promotions on alcoholic drinks...ahem!) - a DVD of Champions League highlights. I must admit, I am a big footy fan and this will bridge the gap between Sunday's World Cup Final and the start of the Premier League season in August!

This afternoon I was busy working away (no, really I was!) on my Mac so decided to multi-task and have Tweetdeck running in the background. Most Twitter competitions have a really short lifespan, so you really need to be on the ball and get your entries in as soon as you can. There were a few competitions on the go this afternoon - including a nice one with @Lurpak to win one of 5 limited edition tea towels by Friday at noon - simply tell them what good food means to you in a tweet and hashtag it #LurpakGF. But the one that caught my eye was a tweet from @CloggsUK - send a photo of you and your Converse trainers to win a pair. Now, I LOVE Converse and have loads of pairs, so I took this photo of my favourite pair with Ryland:

...and I won - hurrah! I really need a clean pair of trainers too...!

5 July 2010

a blog makeover...

For some time now I've been intending to give SuperLucky a bit of a makeover - I'm no expert at blogging and it's taking me a while to get into the swing of things. Hopefully now it looks a bit smarter and more appealing - and I've also had the chance to add links to a few of my favourite websites (see right hand column). I hope you like it!

When I began the blog at the start of 2009 it was essentially to keep a record of my prizes, something that I could look back over at the end of the year and remind myself what I'd been up to. I didn't tell anyone about the blog except my Mum! Since having my baby boy in December, my comping has unfortunately taken a back seat to mumsy jobs - but as the days go by I'm finding it easier to find time for comping in my daily routine (what routine?!) and am keen to make it a big part of my life again.

I'd like my blog to develop into something more than just a list of my wins - I'll be posting new competitions when I find them, and writing blog entries about Twitter, TV gameshows and radio competitions, which hopefully readers will find inspiring and entertaining! If you do read my blog and there's anything in particular you'd like to know about the wonderful world of comping, please don't hesitate to ask!

3 July 2010

I'm the best mum!

A nice little Twitter prize arrived today from Random House books  - a copy of 'The Best Mum' book. Highly appropriate, of course! Ahem.

And another baby related prize turned up from the wonderful Weleda - a tube of baby shampoo & body wash, which Ryland loves. This was a competition on the Facebook Weleda Baby page, where you had to write a poem about their products:

It's gentle, soothing and naturally kind -
Weleda takes care of my baby's behind!

Prizes today:
'Best Mum' book - £4
Weleda Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash - £7
Total 2010 prize value:
£1291
